Helen Verba Series continues with author Helen Thorpe

Please join Colorado SPJ Pro for another installment of the Helen Verba Lecture Series featuring Helen Thorpe, author of “Just Like Us: The True Story of Four Mexican Girls Coming of Age in America.”

Thorpe chronicles the lives of four young women, two who have documentation to be in the U.S., and two who do not. Meanwhile, the immigration debate is heating up around them.

This event is free and open to the public. Thorpe, a freelance journalist in Denver, will be available for questions from the audience and to sign her book.

SPJ and DPC offer discounted tickets to "American Faust"
 
The Denver Press Club and Colorado SPJ Pro are co-sponsoring a documentary at this year's Denver International Film Festival, the world premiere of "American Faust - From Condi to Neo-Condi."

This film takes a critical look at the life and career of former U.S. Secretary of State Condolezza Rice. The director of the film will be present when it is screened on Saturday, Nov. 21, at 4 p.m. at the King Performing Arts Center on the Auraria Campus in Denver.

We have discounted tickets available for $11, $2 less than the normal price. Validated parking is available for all festival attendees in the Tivoli surface parking lots. No validation is available in the Tivoli garage.

AAJA Denver group co-sponsors panel with Society of Professional Journalists, Denver Press Club and Asian Pacific American Bar Association 

In an era when newspapers post their content online for free (so far), news is almost an ubiquitous commodity, and bloggers and social media spread the news in new ways, who owns what? Please join the AAJA, SPJ , Denver Press Club and APABA in a panel discussion covering copyright and intellectual property issues in the age of the Internet.  

The discussion will be held Wednesday, November 11 at the Denver Press Club, 1330 Glenarm Pl. Admission is free. Cash bar reception 6-6:30 pm, followed by the panel and Q&A. 

Panelists from the Colorado chapter of APABA include: 

Charlene Crow, Dorsey Whitney LLP 
Ms. Krogh is an associate in Dorsey’s Trademark, Copyright and Brand Management Group. She serves as intellectual property counsel for small and large businesses, as well as individual artists and inventors. Her practice includes counseling clients regarding ownership and protection of their intellectual property, negotiating and preparing agreements related to intellectual property, and prosecuting and defending infringement matters, both before administrative bodies and in federal and state courts. 

Ms. Krogh also practices in the areas of art and entertainment law and has counseled bands, individuals and entities on issues involving drafting and negotiating contracts, and protection and exploitation of creative works, including photography, artwork, music, software, and literature. She also advises clients on privacy issues, publication torts, and other media issues.  

Paul Cha, Holme Roberts & Owen LLP
Paul Cha is an associate in the Intellectual Property, Technology and Media Practice Group. Mr. Cha has represented clients in various areas of intellectual property, including litigation, patent, trademark and copyright prosecution (procurement), and licensing negotiations. He has litigated and prosecuted patents in the areas of security trading systems, replacement heart valve technology, hand-held therapeutic laser systems, meat processing technologies, fishing equipment, nuclear reactor inspection systems, portable beverage containers, road barrier safety systems, blasting/mining technology, cell growth media, and RFID systems, among others. 

As a co-chair of HRO’s Asian Practice Team, Mr. Cha also works with Asian law firms and companies as their U.S. representative. Mr. Cha comes to HRO with a background in molecular biology, software development, and high school teaching and coaching. Mr. Cha received a Bachelor of Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (“MIT”), a Master of Education from Harvard University's Graduate School of Education, and a Juris Doctor from the University of Denver College of Law.
